MASTERY TAKES TIME: The First 12 Months in a New Role

Across the fashion head office and shop-floor retail roles, we consistently observe the same pattern. It takes 6 months to learn and 12 months to prove it.

The timeline:

  • The first three months are about immersion. Learn the company, the values, the basics of your role and immerse yourself in the team.

  • By six months, capability begins to consolidate. Before this time, it’s hard to have true impact when you’re working with new personalities, systems and processes.

  • Commercial impact and confidence deepen after that point, and it’s at the 1 year mark where you’ll really have mastered a role and proven value through impact. This is often the point where you can consider layering skill growth into your role and to start having intentional conversations about growth pathways in the business.

Whether you are stepping into entry level fashion jobs, casual retail work or a social media manager vacancy, the learning curve in the first 6 months is real.

We truly believe you need a full six months to genuinely understand and perform in a new role.

For this reason we recommend allowing twelve months before initiating a promotion conversation.Twelve months allows you to demonstrate consistency, measurable results and leadership maturity. It builds trust internally and strengthens your credibility.

That said, conversations about growth (as opposed to a formal promotion) do not need to wait. If your focus is skill development, expanding scope or preparing for your next step within your fashion career.

There is a meaningful difference between asking for a new title versus preparing for one.

With Love,

Lauren
